In this process, fusion is produced concurrently over the entire area of joining surfaces by means of heat generated from resistance to electric current through the space where the surfaces are in contact with each other. This machine is very similar to flash welding machine.
Working Principle
In upset welding, the temperature is raised in two different ways. To achieve this, a current through the interface, friction or at times an external source is used. The process requires addition of no extra weld material to the weld. During welding, a portion of the material is expelled from the weld, which is called the upset. The removal of the upset is required to ensure that surface contaminants like oxides or oil are eliminated from the weld metal. Left over contaminants may lead to formation of corrosion or crack.
Uses & Applications
The upset welding equipment is used for several purposes and in many different fields. Some of its application are:
- Steel welding
- Rod welding
- Automobile industry
- Welding sheet metals
