Techniques used for plastic welding
There are various techniques used for welding different types of plastics. Some of the popular techniques of plastic welding are:
- Plastic welding rod: It is an extruded rod used for welding plastics.
- Hot gas welding: In this process, a hot gas, usually air is passed onto the plastic films to be joined, thereby making them plastic at this point.
- High frequency welding: This type of welding process manipulate the chemical structure of some plastics. There occurs a distinction between neutral types of plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, etc; and polar plastics like polyvinyl chloride, polyamides and acetates.
- Contact welding: In this process, two plastic parts are brought together and there are heated tips, which pinch them. This leads to melting and joining the parts in the process.
- Hot plate welding: This process is similar to contact welding, and is useful for welding large plastic parts.
- Ultrasonic welding: In this process, high frequency sound waves are used to melt the materials to be joined.
- Vibration or friction welding: In this type of welding process, the parts to be welded are rubbed together at a lower frequency and higher amplitude.
- Laser welding: The method requires one part to be translucent to the laser and the other to be opaque. The two parts to be welded are put under pressure while the laser beam moves along the joining line.
- Spin welding: In this process, one part of the weld is held stationary, while the other one is spun against the first part at high velocity and pressure.
- Solvent welding: The process involves applying a solvent that can temporarily dissolve the polymer at room temperature.
Plastic welding machines are used for welding various types of plastics. Some of the uses of the machines are:
- Processing PEVA, PVC sheets
- Welding inflatable toys
- Welding plastic tubes
- Processing shoes, handbags, plastic canvas, etc.
- Processing automobile interiors & seat
- Processing solderless terminal cover
- Stationary, plastic bag & special cover processing
