These welders produce a strong bond between almost all kinds of metals. It is used to join or weld dissimilar metals that cannot be joined by the arc processes. The process is not so widely used nowadays, and finds application in limited fields.
Welding Process
The welding process involves producing fusion by high velocity movement of parts to be welded under controlled explosion. Heat required for melting metals is obtained from different sources. It can be generated from shock wave with impact and also from the energy dissipated during collision of surfaces. Heat is also discharged by plastic distortion occurred due to jetting and bubble formation at the interface of the parts to be joined. In order to get a high quality weld, metals must be allowed to flow plastically.
Uses & Applications
These equipmenst are not so widely used and finds application in few fields nowadays. But their application is expected to increase in coming days. Some of the areas where they are used include:
- Cladding of base metals with thinner alloys
- Manufacture of heat exchangers
- Repairing leaking tube-to-tube sheet joint
- Joining pipes in socket joints
- Joining titanium, zirconium and nickel alloys
