It is also called exothermic welding because the filler metal is obtained from an exothermic reaction between iron oxide and aluminum. In this process, welding of metals is done by heating them with superheated liquid metal by means of a chemical reaction between a metal oxide and aluminum with or without the application of pressure. The welding process is widely used in welding railway rails.
Welding Process
The process makes use of composition of 5 parts iron oxide red powder and 3 parts aluminium power heated at high temperature. This results in an intense reaction that produces a red hot iron slag and gaseous aluminium oxide by oxidation and reduction. This produces the filler material.
The method is commonly used in association with oxyacetylene flame to create a good fusion with the working pieces of metal.
Uses & Applications
There are various fields where the thermite welding machine is used. Some of its common uses include:
- Welding rails
- Welding pipes
- Welding pipes
- Joining metal alloys
- Reinforcing bar
- Welding copper bus bars
- Lightning conductors
